Portfolio (Credit) Manager – Willmar, MN

Position Summary:

The Portfolio Manager is primarily responsible for underwriting new business opportunities and maintaining a portfolio of borrowing customers. Although they still have extensive customer contact, they do not have direct sales responsibilities. The role of the Portfolio Manager with borrowing customers will center around the analysis and understanding of the borrowing entity’s accounting and business practices. Therefore an ability to read and analyze financial statements, as well as discuss current and future accounting and business practices with customers to determine creditworthiness is essential. The team (Portfolio Manager and Commercial Relationship Manager) jointly determine credit worthiness and work a portfolio of customers striving to create value with each interaction. The Portfolio Manager plays a large role in maintaining a sound credit culture. The Portfolio Manager prepares credit write-ups for approval on new loan requests and annual reviews. The write-up entails completing thorough financial, borrower and industry analysis and clearly identifying the risks and mitigating factors for each credit. The Portfolio Manager is also responsible for the on-going monitoring of the portfolio including: collection and tracking of required information from the borrower, following up on technical exceptions and working with the banker to ensure that maturing notes are being addressed in a timely fashion.

Role Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will bring a solid knowledge of reading and analyzing various financial statements and demonstrate an ability to use the financial data to explain what is happening in the businesses. The Portfolio Manager must have an inquisitive mind and enjoy digging into details to fully understand a situation. Strong accounting background is desired with a public accounting background helpful. A basic knowledge of loan structuring is also preferred.


  • 4-year degree or equivalent work experience


  • 4+ years experience in credit analysis
  • Knowledge and experience in Commercial business
